Training of medical technologists is necessary since the tasks of a technologist are both physically as well as emotionally taxing. Medical technologists perform many laboratory tests to help physicians to diagnose disease and disorders. Medical technology institutes teach students all skills and professional methods used in laboratories. In such a program of training of medical technicians emphasis is given on handling of modern laboratory equipments like microscopes, cell counters and other advanced instruments. They are trained to identify abnormal cells in tissue samples and blood specimens. For example, students will be able to differentiate between cancerous cells and normal cells.

Training of medical technologists comprises of lectures and laboratory sessions where students learn basic principles and procedures in different areas of medical sciences, chemistry and pathology. To be Medical Technologists, student must have basic knowledge of hematology, coagulation and other body fluids. Clinical chemistry and clinical microbiology are two important part of Medical Technology training program. Aspiring Medical Technologists learns about different techniques of blood banking, immunology and serology. These Medical Technologists are also trained for collection of blood samples and other specimens for testing purpose. Along with all required training in laboratory training, they also learn about laboratory management and education. Some computer applications and management skills are also included in some training programs.

There are many training programs for specialized field. If Medical Technologists takes specialized training in clinical chemistry then they receive special training regarding preparation of specimen and analyze the chemical & hormonal contents of body fluids.

Apart from clinical chemistry, other specialization areas are clinical microbiology, blood bank technologists, immunohematology, immunology, cytotechnology and molecular biology technology.

After successfully completing program in Medical Technology, Medical Technologists can work for a laboratory of hospitals or clinics, physician's office, blood bank, health maintenance organization, a research laboratory and after some years of experience, you can set up an independent laboratory serving hospitals and physicians.

Sufficient training of Medical Technologists along with a couple of years of experience may allow the technologists to assume the supervisory positions in laboratory work. They may become chief medical or clinical laboratory technologist in hospitals.
