Qualification Of Medical Technologists

Medical technologist is a position in medical health profession. They perform some diagnostic analytical tests on body fluids like urine, blood, sputum, peritoneal fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, pericardial fluid, and synovial fluid. The tests are carried out in clinical laboratories. Qualifications of medical technologists include the bachelor's degree or master's degree in medical technology.

Qualification of medical technologist includes a four-year degree program in which classroom course is of 3 years and clinical rotation is for one year. Besides this 3+1 year program some programs are of 2+2 and 4+1 years. In the clinical rotation, student will be given one-year hands on experience in learning each medicine discipline of the laboratory. In the functional laboratory students need to perform diagnostic test under the supervision. During the degree, students work for about 40 hours a week and for 20 to 26 weeks. After completion of this course student earns Bachelors degree as Medical Technologist.

Technologist certified by and remains in good stands with American Society for clinical pathology is permitted to use diploma 'MT' with their name. Besides this, if the diploma is from National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory, Personnel may us 'CLS' with their name. Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments in United States has defined some level of qualification in that student required to carry out tests of different complexities. When medical technologist holds such high degree, they are considered qualified in general to most complex clinical testing that includes HLA testing and blood type reference testing.

In most of the countries obtaining license involves just filling of forms, paying fees and showing the proof of certification by national accrediting agency, however besides this in addition to the national certification many states require state license. New York, California and Florida conducts their own examinations. Almost all the technologists are skilled in all areas of lab however; some technologists may become specialists.

In qualification of medical technologist, branches available to become specialist are immunohematology, microbiology, hematology, immunology, clinical chemistry, coagulation, toxicology, cytogenetics, cytology and virology. Specialty uses additional credentials like 'SBB', 'SH', 'ASCP'. These are some special branches, which add more qualifying levels to Medical Technologist.
