X-ray medical technologists are healthcare professionals who produce images of different body structures. These images taken by X-ray medical technologists may be displayed on X-ray film, computer monitors, films, videotapes or some other output devices. According Health professions council UK, X-ray medical technologists are the one "who produces high quality images of body for doctors to diagnose injuries and diseases."

Apart from taking and displaying images, X-ray medical technologists have many duties to perform. Before taking X-ray image, they have to explain complete procedure to patients and they have to answer their queries. If patient requires any help then they have to help patients to prepare for X-ray procedure. X-ray medical technologists have to monitor patients during the complete procedure. They also have to ensure patient's comfort and privacy. Technologist needs to interpret physician prescription very accurately and then have to use appropriate techniques and most important positioning patient & equipments at right place. If required inject contrast medium. After all preparations, operate diagnostic imaging equipments to produce quality images. X-ray medical technologists must recognize various anatomical structures radiographed.

The most important thing that X-ray medical technologists must take care of is safety. They must follow radiation protection practices, safety and privacy regulations and all measures to reduce risk of staff and patients.

Most X-ray medical technologists work in hospitals or private clinics. If they are working in hospitals then they have to work in different areas like emergency, operating rooms, fluoroscopy, mobile radiography and general radiography. The qualification required for X-ray medical technologists varies worldwide. Usually their educational qualification may include diploma, 3, or four years degree course. Educational curriculum varies in different countries; in formal education, technologists must learn human physiology and anatomy, nuclear physics, medical imaging science and diagnosis, pathology, radiological instrumentation, photographic imaging techniques and chemistry. This whole curriculum is blend of medical sciences and physical sciences.

With adequate experience and some additional training, X-ray medical technologists may become specialists performing CT scanning, MRI scanning and angiography. Some technologists can also become instructors in radiological technology programs. With further training and accreditation from basic levels, X-ray medical technologists can perform other imaging techniques like mammography, Ultrasound sonography, nuclear medicine and CT scanning.
