Health care professionals who carry diagnostic analytical tests, on human body fluids are medical technologists. For diagnosis, responsibilities of medical technologists are to carry test on blood, sputum, urine, peritoneal fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, pericardial fluid, as well as synovial fluid. These tests are carried out in clinical laboratories at hospitals, reference labs, and doctor's office and within biotechnological industries.

Medical technologist who has license to carry out the tests is permitted to analyze human body fluid samples using various techniques in the laboratory. Tests conducted at laboratories are manual white blood cell differentials, analysis via microscopy or advance analytical equipment and bone marrow count. Responsibilities of medical technologists are to assist nurses and doctors in selecting correct lab test and collection methods along with labeling and handling specimens, interpreting analysis result.

Technologist need to have sound knowledge about abnormalities reorganization and correction measures. Responsibilities of medical technologists are to monitor, and troubleshoot analytical devices that include quality control, calibration, run-by-run assessment, recording normal data and statistical control of observed data. Responsibilities of medical Technologists also include recognizing factors that may bring in errors, and rejects contaminated specimens. This helps in maintaining the integrity process at the laboratory.

However besides the maintenance, responsibilities of medical technologists include some common tests to carry out like complete blood count (CBC), electrolyte panel, comprehensive metabolic panel, liver function test( LFT), prothrombin time (PT/INR), urine analysis and activated partial tromboplastin time (PPT or APTT), semen analysis for fertility and post vasectomy studies and routine culture.

Some responsibilities of medical technologists are supposed to give accurate laboratory results within time. These results help in the diagnosis and monitoring the treatments and therefore results need to be accurate. Therefore, many technologists prefer safeguard accuracy. This includes calibration of laboratory instruments, experimental controls, delta checks, and periodic survey from College of American Pathologist.
